Adrian Hernandez and the Role of Erwin Technical College in Solar Training

As the solar industry expands, so does the need for skilled workers who can design, install, and maintain systems that power homes and businesses. Erwin Technical College in Florida is leading the charge in solar education, offering a hands-on program that prepares students for real-world careers. For Adrian Hernandez, Erwin Tech wasn’t just an education - it was a turning point that set him on a path to success.

In his late 20s, Adrian Hernandez found himself at a crossroads. Unsure of his future, that’s when he came across an article about the solar industry, sparking an interest that would change his life. Determined to pursue this new path, Adrian told his school counselor about his interest in solar. She introduced him to Erwin Technical College’s Solar Program, a 600-hour, hands-on training course designed to prepare students for real-world solar careers.

Once enrolled at Erwin Tech, he immersed himself in every aspect of solar energy - from system design to installation, troubleshooting, and permitting. The program, led by Mr. Brocks, not only gave him technical knowledge but also the confidence to build a new future. “Mr. Brocks was a great teacher - he didn’t just teach solar, he helped me turn my life around. I don’t think I’d be here today if it wasn’t for this program,” says Adrian.

Working during the day and taking classes at night, Adrian earned his NABCEP Associate and Professional Certifications. He quickly advanced in his career. Adrian began his career at SEM Power, where he progressed from Installer (2013) to Project Manager (2019). He then joined SolarEdge as a Field Service Engineer (2020) and advanced to Senior Field Service Engineer (2023). Now, he’s a Senior Field Applications Engineer at QCELLS (2025) while also serving as a Service Consultant at CKR Solar. His journey is a testament to the opportunities available in solar with the right training and determination!

Looking back, Adrian knows that his success didn’t happen overnight. It was the combination of hands-on experience, hard work, and the educational foundation he received early on that helped him get where he is today. "The solar industry is always changing," he says, "but if you’re willing to learn and adapt, you can build a career with endless opportunities."
